SoundReplacement

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

Working as part of any group project is filled with many trails and tribulations and with creative media the same can be said about this as also having creative minds working together on a project is a recipe for greatness or disaster. having some common ground on any given project can help meshing the team together to produce something coherent and to a standard that would make all involved happy with the outcome, in saying this having a plan and sticking to it helps as there is a lot less uncertainty and essentially more time to perfect the product as there is less time thinking about what you could do.

A finished product that was to a good quality was produced though some aspects could have been improved. Pre-Production planning was a huge help in this and open communication during the process helped greatly.

As this project was set to be recorded alongside a single that was to be released a lot of energy was spent getting a track that was used for 15 seconds of the replacement, 4-5 weeks was spent recording and mixing this which could have been spent creating other assets for the replacement. this could have been avoided by either prioritising the main project, having the track rehearsed, or simply just making something to suit the scene rather than trying to focus on getting the track recorded and mixed for the project or managing time for this better.

Breakdown in communication and priority between members of the group affected the outcome of the project and the quality that could have been achieved, while the project was a fairly simple one, was complicated by not seeing eye to eye on certain aspects.

Prior to any work being commenced a spotting list for any sounds/dialogue that would be replaced was created and a brainstorming session as to how these sounds could be replicated. processing is an essential part of any project to help immerse the viewer within the scene, things like reverb, EQ, Compression are staples of any recording project and even during the mastering process to ensure broadcast standards are met.

The initial product was reviewed by peers and facilitators and was given some rather constructive feedback in terms of creative decision though during the final stages of the project many of the suggestions where missed and was done to the standards of other members which still did a good job in producing a creative project though could have been refined with some more research and reference to other films of a similar era.

Being on the same page if not working closer with team members is still an aspect that needs to be improved as there is a disconnect from other members in the cohort due to whatever reasons. improving on other practises would include thoroughly understanding members priorities. composition, referencing and seeking external feedback at several points during the process is something that can rectify or acknowledge any issues that could be fixed earlier rather than later.

Overall the project went according to plan with the exception being the amount of time that was spent recording a backing track for the scene.

Keeping work logs up to date with hours spent on each part of the project was something that wasn't grasped early which perhaps was a contributing factor to how the project perhaps couldn't of been to a higher standard.

Having a project plan is always an effective tool in any creative process as it acts almost like a bible for the project and can help keep anyone on the task at hand and clarify any miscommunications during the time the project is active as most aspects/risks should be considered before undertaking any project
