Project1

Audio for Animation

Our concept for Project 1 was to create music for Animation provided by Matthew Kirwan where he had a vision to tell a story using audio.

Pitching this idea was fairly easy for me as sound design is a career I would like to pursue. In order to make this project a success a lot of time was spent with the animation student talking about his character, influences and reding a short screenplay he wrote in order to define this characters place in the world and to learn how to portray his vision.

Tel Concept

In planning for any project, roles had to be deliberated and any risks identified, then careful planning had to be implemented in order to successfully execute the plan to deliver an animation with what the creator had intended so reference material had to be sourced in order to do a few things including an analysis of the tracks selected.

Part of any analytical tear down is to identify:

  • Artist/Song Title: style, traits, album

  • Producer/Production: style, traits, albums

  • Instrumentation: guitar, drum, synth etc

  • Structure/Arrangement: what instruments are playing where and when, a-b-a-b-c-b-d etc

  • Time/Tempo/Meter: length, bpm, common complex timing

  • Track Breakdown: use daw to illustrate the above points

  • Tonality/Timbre: how the instruments are being used, dynamics throughout

  • Psychoacoustics: Mixing, levels, panning
